On Demand Manufacturing Service launched by Galway based 3D printing company
A Galway based 3D printing company has announced the design of an innovative face shield for dentists.
3D Technology Ltd., based in Galway Technology Centre, has established itself as a dynamic, problem solving business during the Covid-19 pandemic, developing a number of 3D printed products for various sectors.
Having previously developed 3D designed solutions for both the medical device sector and frontline healthcare workers, the company has now announced the design of a dentistry face shield prototype, developed to address the specific needs of dentists as they treat patients. According to 3D Technology in house designer Martin Downey, there are a number of features that are proving particularly attractive to the dental community.
“What we have seen is that dentists require a face shield that can adapt to the various functions they are carrying out during the course of a normal day. With this in mind, our new prototype includes an adjustable shield, allowing dentists to pull the brim in and out for different equipment attachments.”
The new dentistry face shield prototype builds on a number of existing 3D printed PPE products that have already been developed by sister company MedScan3D. Jacqui O’Connor, Technical Director with MedScan3D, sees significant potential for the new dentistry face shield.
“To date, our existing standard face shields have been a great success, with users consistently commenting on their comfort and durability, and we have ensured our dentistry shield meets the same standards. Furthermore, our shields are reusable as the brim is autoclavable which is unique in the Irish market.”
While the dentistry shield is currently at prototype stage, it is expected to launch in the near future according to Downey. “Right now we are liaising with a number of different dentists in Ireland and the United States regarding design sign off and we are looking forward to bringing the shield to market as soon as possible.”
While the company is looking forward to launching its latest product, the ongoing Covid-19 crisis continues to place a huge strain on a range of industries. With the increased awareness of the benefits of 3D printing, James Wall founder 3D Technology believes there are numerous opportunities ahead for his company.
“3D printing has really come to the fore during this pandemic, with companies around the world recognising the quick turnaround solutions that 3D printing offers. We’re excited to be working a number of projects outside of face shield development - while we can’t say too much at present due to NDA agreements, we are looking forward to announcing further details in the coming weeks and months.”
