MedScan3D completes AMBI Safe installation at Aerogen facility
As countries across the globe continue to develop strategies to suppress COVID-19, a key battle ground has developed around the transmission of the virus via inanimate surfaces such as door handles, light switches and other commonly touched surfaces. Research conducted by Greifswals University Hospital and Ruhr-Universitat Bochum has shown that the virus can remain infectious for between 2 days and 9 days, with this figure rising up to 28 days under certain circumstances.

In response to the challenge posed by the transmission of Covid-19 via surfaces, Galway based company MedScan3D have created a unique solution with their AMBI Safe range of products, which drastically reduces the spread of Covid-19 via commonly touched areas.
As awareness of AMBI Safe has grown, MedScan3D have commenced installations at a number of client facilities, including leading aerosol drug delivery company Aerogen. The AMBI Safe range of products are 3D printed in an antimicrobial material, which contains a Nano-Copper additive which reduces the amount of viable particles of fungi, viruses, bacteria and a wide range of microorganisms. The products are created by its in-house team of design specialists from backgrounds in the medical and 3D printing sectors.
According to MedScan3D founder Jacqui O’Connor, the AMBI Safe technology is proving a key weapon in the fight against Covid. “Just like any other company operating in these Covid times, we were faced with a number of challenges in our workplace regarding sanitisation of our environment and doing everything we could to keep our team safe. By leveraging the experience of our team, we developed a number of 3D printed solutions that have ultimately become the AMBI Safe range that we supply to our customers.”
The benefits of AMBI Safe, meanwhile, seem pretty clear with users of the products reporting a safer home or working environment, while the time and resources previously required to continually clean and sterilise all surfaces has been greatly reduced.
The technology behind AMBI Safe is based on the addition of copper additives to the 3D printing process, with Ireland’s Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC) confirming that coronavirus can survive less than 4 hours on copper surfaces. The process of actually including copper additives into the AMBI Safe products, meanwhile, was developed in conjunction with specialists 3D Technology Ltd., a sister company of MedScan 3D.
